While Swimmers Escaped Violence, Popular Image Captures Beach Patrol Sprinting ‘Pedal to the Metal’ To the Scene.
Alexandra Ching, a lifelong resident of Bondi, views the renowned coast as her personal space. On that fateful weekend evening, she, like many neighbors, noticed pops reverberating around the community.
“That was the initial assumption, but I thought it was too light and no one could see them,” Ching states. She left her residence, she observed people “flooding up Bondi Road”. The looks they wore signaled a crisis was unfolding.
As she stood on the avenue, talking to a couple who had rushed up the incline in their swimwear, she became aware of someone approaching from behind. The person was a rescuer, running at full speed to Bondi unshod from the nearby Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while transporting a medical device.
“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I spotted this flash of blue,” she recalls. “He was just flying past. He was the only one moving in the opposite way that all the others was trying to get away from, carrying that big kit and barefoot … He’s running into something that undoubtedly every fibre in your being would signal you to go in the other direction.
“Absolutely no pause, but just completely full throttle sprinting.”
A Powerful Moment of Courage In the Wake of Tragedy
The photograph Ching captured of the rescuer, since identified as Jackson Doolan, quickly spread as one of many moments of heroism in the following of the tragic event.
Andy Reid, another beach safety officer, explained that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to support the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to help emergency personnel, law enforcement and paramedics caring for dozens of victims.
Community Outpouring and Support
Doolan’s actions was a single example among several to emerge from the neighbourhood, with the patrol base beside the location of the violence serving as a temporary medical station. Reports indicate that colleagues were also seen helping out, for instance rushing into the water to save people needing help.
In the days after the events, comments of appreciation circulated widely. A social media message expressed gratitude for the lifeguards who demonstrated that “kindness will always triumph over evil”.
The team of rescuers published a communication, saying they were “coming to terms with what transpired”.
“Our thanks go out to all for your kind messages and support. We are overwhelmed by the kindness shown towards our responders,” the organization commented. “In time, we will recount our experiences in the hope that it supports those impacted.”
Local Government Commendation
Waverley council, the administrative organization that oversees many permanent beach safety officers, remarked that the crew acted heroically from the moment the incident began until late that evening.
“We have heard so many powerful stories, but the popular photo of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help save lives is extraordinary,” stated a local official.
“The team show altruism every day in ensuring our iconic beaches protected for the public, but what we saw on that day should be commended.
“As we grieve and grapple with the atrocity of this violent and horrific tragedy, I think it is vital that we reflect on just how much positivity we have witnessed in the midst of such evil.”
