The distinctive yellow-colored residential building visible behind helped us verify the footage.

We are analyzing images and video shared earlier today that depict the scene of a reported car bomb blast that Russian officials say fatally injured a senior soldier in Moscow.

Russian authorities confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that exploded and that he succumbed of his wounds. A probe is under way.

Our starting point to check the site from which the images were from relied on social media reports indicating the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the Russian capital.

We used panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex to match the distinctive yellow colour of a nearby residential complex captured in the video.

Identifying additional buildings, lamp-posts and the road configuration verified the exact location the pictures were taken.

We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the images had not been manipulated.
