The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Discloses He Knows How The Apple TV+ Show Will Conclude... For Now.
The acclaimed writer-producer never anticipated that Pluribus would turn into a massive hit. “The viewers have been incredible,” he states. “It was unexpected the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
Now that Season 1 of the acclaimed sci-fi show wrapping up—and a second season greenlit and underway—the creative team opened up about the viewer reception and whether it will influence the future direction of Pluribus.
On the Incredible Audience Reaction
One could easily to get sidetracked by the rampant praise and audience predictions regarding Pluribus. The creator is striving to ignore the noise.
“It's like being force fed your favorite dessert and being tickled to death,” he explains. “It's the greatest thing, but I learn of it through word of mouth, and that's intentional. I have never looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever intend to. Not because I don't care. It's a deep trap I know I would disappear down and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.”
Despite Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no escaping the immensely favorable response to the series. The most practical strategy is to accept it graciously and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“We don't try to tailor anything,” says Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not changed by online forums.”
“We prefer to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan concludes.
A Pressing Query: Has the creator See the Conclusion of Pluribus?
So if the creative staff aren’t being guided by public opinion, can we assume they have already decided how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? In short yes… sort of.
“There are some compelling concepts about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan reveals. “yet we stand ready to abandon a decent plan for a superior concept. That philosophy has guided us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we find a more perfect path and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Alternatively, if all else fails, executive producer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to fall back on.
“My recurring proposal is that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and the characters are inside it,” Smith jokes, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Alternatively, why mess with the classics?
“I want Carol to open her eyes with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan says with a smile.
Pluribus is streaming now on the streaming service.
