Edwards along with O'Neil represent the early names under consideration to replace Vitor Pereira as manager of Wolves.
The previous coach was sacked on Sunday following the team's ten-game without a victory beginning to the Premier League campaign.
And Edwards and O'Neil - both of who have historic associations to the club - are part of the options to be evaluated by the club leadership.
Edwards is currently at Middlesbrough, which would create a possible hurdle to his appointment at Molineux.
However the ex- Luton manager - who made over a century of appearances for Wolves during his playing career - is considered a strong candidate for the vacancy.
The 42-year-old is reportedly enjoys support from the club directors as they start the search of hiring a new manager.
Gary O'Neil is additionally emerging as a unexpected contender, although he would be a surprising choice considering he was sacked by Wolves in December last year.
The ex- West Ham United midfielder is out of work which means Wolves would not need to provide any compensation.
