NY Launches Online Platform for Public to Report ICE Videos After Arrests of 4 US Citizens
New York state AG has rolled out a fresh reporting form encouraging locals to submit images and footage of ICE operations across the state. This move follows a day after a major enforcement action rattled Manhattan's Chinatown, prompting mass outcry.
American Citizens Arrested During Raid
A US congressman announced during a midweek briefing that four American citizens were arrested and held for "almost a full day" following the previous day's operation. Rallies occurred in the city on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
"Each citizen has the right to reside free from terror," the AG wrote in a release.
"For those who saw and recorded federal operations recently, I urge you to provide that footage with us. We are pledged to reviewing these reports and evaluating any legal breaches."
Form Details
The portal includes spaces to submit visual evidence of the raid, plus a section to indicate where it occurred. Prior to sending, submitters must tick a checkbox that states that "authorities might employ any materials, images, or footage in a legal proceeding, including in a lawsuit or official statement."
Information about the ICE Action
The Chinatown raid, which onlookers say included over fifty ICE personnel, took place in a famous area of NYC where imitation purses, items, goods and other goods are regularly available en masse – frequently to tourists.
Recordings of Tuesday's raid reveal numerous hooded and equipped personnel securing and holding a man, and pushing back onlookers. Throngs of locals followed the personnel along the roads. An military-style transport was observed traveling down the urban roads.
Leadership Statements
During a Wednesday press conference held with the immigrant advocacy group, Representative Goldman, a Democratic representative, announced that four nationals were detained by ICE for about 24 hours and that there were "no circumstances where US citizens should be detained for without cause." He noted the persons were released on Wednesday with no accusations made.
"The intent is obvious here. It is not focused on deporting lawbreakers," he said. "This represents a armed campaign to provoke unrest. It is purely a pretext to generate turmoil for federal officials to bring in the troops to halt unrest that they themselves caused."
Broad Criticism
Fury over the federal action escalated – each of the political contenders criticized the operation, as did Governor Kathy Hochul.
"Repeatedly, the current administration selects heavy-handed tactics that create fear, not safety. It has to end," a political candidate stated.
NYC community groups voiced concern as well.
"Immigration agents descended on the neighborhood with military-style vehicles, covered personnel and tactical gear to target street vendors attempting to earn income. This action had no relation to public safety and everything to do with terrorizing immigrant families and neighborhoods," remarked the head of a advocacy group.
Agency Rules
Official guidelines prohibits the holding of citizens and the bureau has claimed it refrains from take into custody citizens. Nevertheless, independent reporting has revealed that numerous American nationals have been taken illegally by federal agents since the start of the present government.
Ongoing Trend
Enforcement actions have been cropping up increasingly in the state and nationwide recently.
A mid-October raid in the city center was the first known raid on an immigrant shelter of the existing leadership. Demonstrations targeting immigration enforcement are commonplace including allegations of force and inhumane treatment.
Latest, a submission submitted by advocacy organizations stated healthcare failures of pregnant women in detention centers.
