Instructor Fatally Shot and Two Dozen Pupils Seized in Gunbattle at Nigerian School
Weapon-carrying attackers have fatally shot an educator and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an assault against a female high school in Nigeria's northwestern region, police reports indicate.
The criminal group invaded the public educational institution for female students in Kebbi State's Maga area at roughly 4 in the morning local time on the beginning of the work week, officials stated.
The armed individuals "engaged police personnel on duty in a firefight" before climbing over the boundary wall and taking the pupils captive from their living quarters, authorities disclosed.
An educational worker was killed while trying to protect the students. An additional employee received firearm injuries and is now undergoing medical care.
Observers recounted a considerable contingent of armed individuals, identified in the area as outlaw groups, who appeared discharging weapons intermittently to create fear.
Area inhabitants told reporters that the attackers afterwards forced a contingent of young women into adjacent wilderness.
The law enforcement confirmed they had positioned "supplementary tactical squads, in coordination with armed forces and vigilante groups" to the area.
A organized locating and saving mission is currently ongoing in nearby woodlands and believed flight corridors.
In the last several years, schools in northern Nigeria have regularly come under attack for armed groups, who often carry out abductions to request monetary settlements or secure advantages in discussions with officials.
The incident in Kebbi State emphasizes the ongoing security challenge afflicting the area, leaving families in Maga in a situation of anxious fatigue as they anticipate and pray for their young ones' unharmed reappearance.
Protection challenge in the northern regions of Nigeria has intensified significantly in the last several months, with schools bearing the brunt of the conflict.
