Explosion Takes Three Carabinieri During Eviction Action in Northern Italy
A trio of officers lost their lives and more than a dozen people were hurt in what appears to be intentional detonation from gas at a country home in Italy's north.
How It Happened
The detonation occurred as police and firefighters approached the house close to the Verona region to execute an removal notice for three siblings aged in their 50s and 60s.
All three deceased individuals belonged to the Carabinieri force.
Investigation Developments
A man and a woman got detained at the location and another man who ran away subsequent to the incident was found not long after. Each of them have been transported to hospital.
The detonation could be audible some 5km (3 miles) away and images from the area displayed the building left as a mass of wreckage.
“We are in a period of mourning,” stated the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi, who added that attempts had been made to remove the three family members in the previous occasions.
Background and Motive
The president of the Veneto area, President Zaia, explained the property was under an removal notice due to financial obligations incurred by the three owners.
Mediators had been sent to engage the family members who had locked themselves into the house. When the Carabinieri came soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities think one of the residents caused the explosion.
“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” provincial police commander the police commander informed news outlets.
“A gas cylinder had been ignited, and the blast immediately struck our personnel,” he added.
Molotov cocktails were also found at the property, the minister stated.
Impact Assessment
The wounded by the blast comprised 11 other members of the Carabinieri as well as a trio of personnel of the state police and a firefighter.
Based on information from the local prosecutor, the building was in a poor condition and had no electricity.
He believed the detonation had happened on a floor above the doorway and stated to reporters it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Moments before the incident, he mentioned members had “noticed a hissing sound, likely the propane tanks being opened”.
Neighbor Statements
“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” nearby inhabitants informed reporters, adding that the three had in the past stated to “detonate the property” rather than leave the house.
“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”
Minister of Defence Minister Crosetto stood alongside other political leaders in commemorating the trio of personnel who had been killed in the performance of their duties.
